Coach David Cooper heads up GTA Prep’s 2018-19 season
David Cooper has plenty of experience in basketball.
And the Brampton man will be sharing that knowledge this fall, coaching top high school talent, when the GTA Prep Basketball Academy begins their training at Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School in September 2018.
“There is so much talent here,” said Cooper, who is well aware of the quality of basketball players coming out of the GTA. With so many athletes having gone to the United States to attend high school, prep programs are springing up in Ontario to offer elite athletes a chance to compete against high-level competition without having to go south.
All the athletes who play at GTA Prep will be expected to meet the same academic and conduct requirements of other students. However, they will not participate in any Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association (ROPSSAA) games.
While there are plenty of GTA athletes that are would be interested in the GTA Prep program it will not be restricted to just locals, Cooper said he has already had inquiries from Europe and the United States from prospective students and their families.
Cooper played NCAA basketball at James Madison University, graduating in 2006 with a degree in Kinesiology Sports Management and Business. He also played for the US Virgin Islands national team.
He played professionally for the Manchester Mill Rats. In 2010 he co-founded the Saint John Mill Rats of the National Basketball League of Canada and remains a co-owner.
Cooper came to Brampton in the 2013-2014 season to serve as an assistant coach and consultant for the Brampton A’s of the NBL of Canada.
Cooper also has worked with youth players including partnering with Matt Bonner, of the San Antonio Spurs and former Toronto Raptor, to run clinics and workshops in New Hampshire.
